The Jennie and Alfred Char

 Memorial Scholarship

“Our parents provided us with all the resources, love, and support that we needed to accomplish anything.  This is a wonderful way to continue that legacy.”

-- Julie Char

In December of 2007, IMPACT Instructor Julie Char’s close friends surprised her by making gifts to IMPACT to honor the memory of her father Alfred who passed away that summer. “In lieu of flowers, we decided to support an organization that is meaningful and dear to Julie. IMPACT naturally came to mind with all the amazing volunteer work she does. We’re inspired by Julie’s enthusiasm and active involvement with IMPACT,” said Nancy Lee, the organizer of the initial effort.

That year, for the first time ever, IMPACT had the resources to grant scholarships to every qualified applicant.

Thanks to Julie and her friends the Char Scholarship fundraising effort continues. For the past three years a committed group of friends and family has made contributions to a dedicated fund that pays for scholarships and customized classes that reach low-income girls who attend tuition-free middle schools dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty through education.

In describing her experience of the IMPACT class, one scholarship awardee said, “I can’t express how grateful I am for the education we received.  I learned how to assess situations, respond with wisdom, take preventative measures where possible, and defend myself when needed.” Another described the IMPACT program as “a life saving gift that I will be forever grateful for.”
